Our colleague, friend and much loved all round good egg John Austin in his own words. He fired over this biography just as he was taken ill and on the day of his funeral it seems timely to let you the No Barriers Radio listeners into a little secret of the myth, the man and the legend that is John Austin, RIP – taken way too soon. But will never be forgotten. Play that funky music…
I know very little about Samsara Rad, which is my bad. But I very much like Purple Lovers - reminds me a little of Blinding Nights by The Weeknd - my kids love that song! Full of high energy, fast tempos and damn fine psychedelic falsetto, it’s great.
After a summer hiatus we all clamber on board the tour bus and the destination this time is Malta. I Can’t Say No by singer/songwriter is the ideal and perfect summer track, the perfect amount of rhythmic beats and melodies, subtle over dubbing of catchy lyrics - yet has a dark and intriguing side too.
Got to love at bit of high octane fun. Fans of 90s band’s such as Blink 182 are in for a real treat. Southampton’s very own Everyone Lies latest release Biscuits is two minutes of pure punk.
Veterans of the music industry Gary Mills and CJ are Vix:20, after walking away from the music industry - vowing not to return. They are back. Now rejuvenated, and to quote the band themselves, “hard rockers turned to the dark side of pop”.
Fans of Sam Smith, Goldfrapp and others are in for a real treat. Brooklyn native Aria Jay’s When the sun comes up’. Is an indie pop meets chill out banger.
A bit of deviation from our usual path, but we at NBR like all types of music and if it’s great then we will review it - that and the fact the DJ 3jay lives not that far from where I live.
Apologies this came out back in April, but it’s well worthy of a mention in despatches. Well this makes me smile, which is the world in which we live is a great thing.
A bit behind here with the enormous amount of new tunes filling my inbox (Mark) Daly and The Ravens - pardon the pun. Released back in April but worthy of a reprise - just sorry it’s taken so long to get here.
I love this. Capeland is very comforting, using Liv’s beautiful voice, energy and tone - to be honest it’s been on repeat (I think my neighbours must think someone’s had a relationship break-up - that sort of endless repeat!)
The latest release is a cover to the Lesley Gore’s 1964 iconic “You Don't Own Me”. Now, to me covers need to be unique and surprising, I am thinking of Disturbed’s version of Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’ or Linkin Park’s version of Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’.
Newcastle residents and indie electronic four-piece band LAZYRAVE are new to us here at No Barriers Radio, (their first single was in 2019) but we like - a lot! Terraform is the latest release, multi-layered, chilled (imagine a post night out come down - not sure I remember that far back if the truth be told!)
Tickets please. Next stop LA. Well this I like a lot, it kind of reminds me (conceptually) of a James Bond theme opening credits. I can really see that. Redgrave’s lyrical style is very much that of Beth Gibbons of Portishead fame, which we can all agree isn’t a bad place to be.
Stalwarts of The Inner Sleeve, The Great Leslie, return yet again with another banger. Hot on the heels of the excellent ‘Hold On To My Ex’ comes ‘Feel Alive’ which is, as usual excellent.
Long haul tour bus journey this time. I’d pay for the extra leg room that’s for sure. Next stop Australia and the latest single ‘Bottle of Sun’ by Avalanche. A four piece hard rock meets old school rock band from Western Sydney, playing high octane, frenetic heart-racing, gut-busting, roof crashing Aussie rock.
Oooo, I like this a lot, I can’t exactly put my finger on exactly why. It could be the nostalgia of the jangly guitars, or the way it crosses the indie divide and dabbles it’s toes into the murky world of pop.
Something new to the Inner Sleeve, and a genre warping indie meets blues meets folk meets country meets sixties inspired alternative pop (keep up) band is Hull’s acoustic three-piece The Quicksilver Kings and their latest release is the glorious Autumn (while you were sleeping). It’s mighty fine, but where do we start?
Fans of 90s RnB are in for a real treat from Melis, previously a contestant on Norways’s X factor (yes we are back on tour again) and provided the voices for amongst other Sally in Disney’s car and more importantly (in my eyes at least) Smurfs: The Lost Village (boom there we have it!) Her latest release is Last Night, and it’s a corker.
All aboard the tour bus again, and this time next stop is Chicago and Billboard-charting pop/electronic/dance, Fishburn. He only arrived on the scene in 2020 (nothing happened that year right?)
This is rather cool. How can I describe Acid Claw’s music, not sure, but I will give it a go. They are a punk band that gets in a slanging match with metal band, meets and has a tear up with ska band and then has a beer with thrash band (I think that’s a good as it’s going to get) - formed in 2020 (remember that year anyone?)
Why don't you… Just switch off your TV and do something less boring instead (a reference there for the millenials… not!) Rather than just sit watching the Ukraine shit show that we have been watching for the past couple of months, Hinckley native Steven Faulkner decided to put his creative talents to articulate his thoughts.
Fans of the Inner Sleeve will (hopefully) recognise the name of Italian Alt rockers Piqued Jacks. We featured earlier on in the year the excellent Everything South the follow-up is Particles, which is a complete change of pace, in fact stretches to a halt and handbrakes into a ballad.
Fans of The Inner Sleeve will know we have included Black Country 70s inspired rockers Tyrannosaurus Nebulous before. And the latest release Magnetar is brimmed full of old school riffs, modern hooks, solos and James Miles’ unique rock god voice.
Fans of 90s trance are in for a treat here, and a bit of change of pace for The Inner Sleeve. Our musical journey now stops off in Romania with multi-instrumental musician Doru Jambru, drawing inspiration from such trance luminaries such as Robert Miles and Paul Van Dyk.
Well March has seen a glut of excellent tunes into my inbox that it’s hard to keep up. And Requiem by the multi-talented London based Koburg is no exception. When I say multi-talented, she performs all the vocals and instruments and just put us all to shame, and while everyone else was panicking over their soda bread starter, she was teaching herself the cello and violin to add more orchestral depth to her tracks.
Back on the world tour, and back in the US with another stop in Tennessee to visit Christopher C. Romero aka Romero, an actor, singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist based in Nashville. My My, Hey Hey is a eclectic mix of hard rock, country, southern rock and acoustic genres.
Back on the tour bus and this time we head off to gig with Tennessee native singer-songwriter Nick Henderson and his debut single ‘No U’ out now. Drawing on musical inspiration across the board such as the Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, Dave Matthews etc. I’ve listened to this a number of times and I think it’s great, clearly a big hint of inspiration of Ed Sheeran (you may have heard of him?) but in my eyes better (sorry I have nothing personally against Ed).
Singer/songwriter Sofia Gillani’s latest release Water Run Dry is an ode to preserving even when it feels like odds are against you, as in ‘the water has run dry’ - I like the analogy.
Well this is ace, (its on my running playlist already) a heady combination of beats, guitars, and vocals. Wrex are an alt-rock Brighton based duo, Mae Seaton on vocals and multi-instrumentalist George Donoghue.
Assume the ‘rock’ guitar stance. Black Water Fiend is a heavy rock band based in Coventry, formed in 2018. Wish You Well is (very) heavy on the drums, (another one to add to the running playlist, more time off the PB now… maybe).
I thought that 2022 musically had started off a bit slow but since the end of Jan it has literally exploded with such a wide array of stonking great tracks. And this is no exception. An excellent cover and a fitting tribute to the untimely passing recently of Meatloaf.
All aboard the tour bus, next stop Warsaw, Poland and a date with art-rock band Screaming Earth. Let’s paint a picture, imagine if Pink Floyd and Public Information Broadcasting had a ménage à trois with Mike Oldfield then you are getting close to the track Unmasked Dreams.
Manchester Indie, alt-rock band, The Perps latest single Wake On Saturday is kind of a throw back to when Mancunian bands pulled the air-waves. Oh those were the days…
Wow. This is amazing! And one of the reasons I love music, it’s the way that you can be totally blown away with one track and can change your mood. I salute you A State of Romance.
Regular readers of the Inner Sleeve will know we are fans of Just a Ride, hot on the heels of the excellent Not Enough is the equally brilliant No Way Out.
A rock opera in the making, with so many layers, it’s simply beautifully curated. The drum and piano are sumptuous with New York native Saahil’s vocals (think Brian Molko of Placebo) are spot on.
Hailing from Cambridge, alt-rockers Standing by Statues latest release is excellent (a classic in the making). I like this very much, the perfect blend of haunting vocals and energetic (and loud) guitar interspersed with rhythmical beats
This upbeat, foot tapping tune made me smile immediately, which can’t be bad start and that was merely the beginning. I Wonder by Skinny Knowledge kind of has a bit of everything you need, it’s raucous, containing thunderous drum, roaring guitars, powerful vocals yet it’s perfectly created.
The past couple of weeks has been pretty damn great for new releases (in fact I have been slightly overwhelmed TBH). One to add to the play loud playlist is Tattooed Heart by Liverpool's very own excellent Attic Theory.
Well, I like this very much. Canadian singer-songwriter, Marshall Potts, from British Columbia, whose back-catalogue includes two movie soundtracks and three CDs. His latest release, The Storm, is Americana, meets Country Rock with a dalliance with Rock, lyrically slick The Storm is a multi-layered beast of a song with big booming guitars, rhythmic drums, layered with exquisite backing vocals and topped off perfectly with tantalising banjo chords - who doesn’t like a tune with a banjo!)
Listeners to The Deuce show here on No Barriers Radio will be aware that we adore The Kuts’ ANIMO, released last year. The Kut is a multi-instrumentalist and all-round alpha-geek (she has a PhD in Psychology, specialising in schizotypy - nope me neither).
Well, we (I mean, I) like this very much. The Great Leslie may have only been formed in 2020, but let’s say they have been prolific (Eight singles, an EP and counting!) How On to My Ex is a poppy, upbeat indie/rock track - think of a hint of The Communards, meets a dash of Alt J. Love it!
A remastered and rereleased version of Hey Boy! Bu colourful coiffured Scottish band Single by Sunday. Formed back in 2015, (the original version of Hey Boy! was released last year), this time punchier with more depth.
Next up on our world tour are Italian dance rockers Piqued Jacks’ latest release Everything South is a punchy edgy gritty dance-rock track with melodic bass and explosive guitar riffs.
Alternative rock out Nightblade’s latest release Feeding The Reel is an energetic, booming, loud rock T.U.N.E. Vocalist and frontman, Mark Crosby explains, “This record is a journey into mystery, darkness, and the fearful unknown – a quest to understand the human mind and its minefield of complexities.”
Well, this is pretty amazing. Formed during one of the interminable lockdowns, Zac and The New Men have been taking their home town’s music scene, Swansea, by storm.
The Roadside Bandits Project’s latest blues guitar-driven single, Little Babylon, features vocals from The King’s Pistols’ very own Julian Casewell. The track draws sombre parallels of historical maleficence to the devastating effects of Covid-19 today.
This year we are No Barriers Radio are throwing our new music net as far afield as possible. First up is Toronto’s very own Lammping (named after a public enemy lyric with an extra ‘m’).
Fans of classic 70s hard rock are in for a treat with Tyrannosaurus Nebulous’s latest release ‘Deal with my Evil’. Hailing from Stourbridge, bar the bassist (he is from Caerphilly).
A bit of 90s retrospective, or at least it would be if it was made 30 years ago, but it’s new! Not Enough by Just a Ride has a dash of Pearl Jam, hint of Stone Temple Pilots, blah blah (you get the idea! You can make up your own mind).
Christmas may have come and gone but hey ho (ho ho ho) - just look at this! Just look at this! Lego does it again with this amazing Fender® Stratocaster™, in a choice of two colours (black and red, obviously), a guitar stand and a model of the classic 65 Princeton® Reverb amplifier.
Originally released in 2020, but who remembers Christmas 2020? The government clearly doesn’t, but let’s avoid politics here in the Inner Sleeve! Eventually charting at a stonking No10 on Christmas Day.
Christmas songs, Love 'em or hate ‘em, personally, I’m in the ‘bring it on’ camp. Christmas No1 used to be a badge of honour and everyone vied from that honour from Elton to er, Bob The Builder. We asked our good friends from The Deuce show to pick three new releases from this year, and here they are;
Stuck on a gift idea or need to drop some serious hints? Yet want to support your local record shop and boost your record collection at the same time? Then we may have found you the perfect gift.
Following on from the excellent City Lights, which came out in the summer, but with one thing and another, I never got around to posting a review. Which was a big mistake
With more than a nod to the vocals of a cross between Linkin Park and a sprinkling of Rage Against The Machine (which I think we can all admit can’t be such a bad thing).
With more than a hint of The Editors meets War on Drugs, Sparks by Catalysts is a ballsy, booming indie rock track is a T U N E. Some tracks you hear for the first time and you want to hear them live.
London Indie alternative rock four-piece may have only formed in 2020, but they haven’t let anything like a global pandemic get in the way and hold them back.
Well hello, proper old skool M.E.T.A.L. Stabbed in the Back is high tempo, fast and furious, big riffs, heavy on rock n' roll, from Sheffield's second-best rock band (I am under contract to say that - you know who you are), Black Spiders.
So far this week has been a great new music week and Uninspired by Dead Reynolds, out this Friday, is no exception. Uninspired is the third single from their debut album, 'Breathe with Strangers'.
The start of a new week, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed? Nope me neither, but this hit my inbox this morning and I have to say I think it's great! The debut solo album from More Kicks frontman James Sullivan, Light Years, was born out of a challenge to write 10 songs in 10 days during last year's lockdown.
